Years Young by Laala Kashef Alghata

We are twenty years young
he said, with a smile,
with a grin as wide as a bridge.
Twenty years young, like it was clever.
Never mind the contradiction
right there
(that only old people say
that they’re young)

— the young just barrel through
causing fires
crushing hearts
breaking legs.

His fingers wrapped around my own
tightly,
leave soft bruises
little yellow marks —

he kissed them before they even appeared —

we are young! he screamed
socks balled up in the corner,
knickers in a twist.

Twenty years young,
he says, raising his glass,
like it’s a promise,
crisp.
